Outside / Inside

Outside – the hedgerow flickers in the breeze; buses go by and school children shout to one another as they walk home. Inside, the house is quiet. I close my eyes and start to sing.

Spring
03:26
|
|||
I’m waiting for spring, waiting for birds to sing again
Waiting for leaves
To burst from buds green,
Cling to the trees and
Whisper the breeze
Morning star to guide me from the night into the day
A burst of orange sky, a gift
We all begin again
Bees, humming new time
Blossom held tightly to the rimes
Of winter now done
A new season spun
On hedgerow song sung
The Joy all to come
Born upon a tide, a swell
A wind that calls your name
A flower blooms
And sooner soon
We all begin again
Ridge and furrow, nest and burrow
Set and warren, wing and bosom
Hive and hollow, lark and swallow
Stream and river
Here under perfect English skies
All is sudden and full of life
And all things deep inside can feel
The quickening of time
And begin again

Oh, the starless city
03:46
|
|||
Oh, the starless city beats and hums to cars, to lights, to bass and drums and all the things that it becomes when night time falls upon
The glass, the steel, the concrete tower blocks, the slated spires, the broken clocks. The city that cannot be stopped - it just marches on.
All things change in time but does the city ever tire?
Oh, the city skyline, cranes and all and buildings wide and new and tall and shadows, crisp, that dull then fall as night time comes upon
The starless city streets and begs for us to fill the lanes, the shops, the pubs and be the things it needs because the city marches on
All things change in time but does the city ever tire?
Because it needs things like us, like as money, like as blood.
All things change in time but does the city ever tire?

Time

Time
You own everything
Yield to no one, Time
I’m cast, thrown, flung along
Lines omnipotent, Time
That there were ways to cheat the days
But , Time, you own me too
Time,
Time enough.
Behind me
and forever on, Time
I have found a way inside
Point to point the lines of Time
Words and dreams
My memories
Are the tiny threads that I cling to

Above the fields
04:58
|
|||
Signatures of shining light,
Diamond speckled in the night,
Are galaxies all doomed to die
They named you Gods and numbers
Still
And still you hang, all wondrous ‘til
This blackbird spoken morning broken
And hide yourselves behind the light of day
And yet to constantly hover above
The hills, trees, fields and the roads
And everyone
Each crystal point and moonlit edge
Is lines and time and course and there
A single breath of doubt fills the air
And all across the sky besides
The paths of planes and satellites
Lie scattered stars and worlds
Vast and wide
And hide themselves behind the light of day
And yet to constantly hover above
The hills, trees, fields and the roads
And everyone of us
Alone
